Just a little history on the Double R Squares. The Double R Squares was started in Southern Utah by Scott Smith in the early 2000’s. In 2004, Scott decided to go back to school to become a teacher and left the Club. The Club at that time was called the Scott Smith Squares. In Feb. when Scott left, Ralph Rawlinson from Cedar City, took over the club. Ralph’s wife Coralie passed away the Nov. before this. Linda Hinton who had called for the Dixie Squares, renamed the Sunshine Dancers, married Ralph in 2004. Ralph continued to call for the club and Linda helped out. Ralph Rawlinson was the sole caller of this club until 2008.
Duane and Shauna Woodmansee moved to St. George in 2005 and in 2006 Lee Gordon who was calling for the Sunshine Dancers club retired and Duane and Ralph and Linda shared calling responsibilities.
As active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ralph and Linda decided to serve a mission for their church and left in 2008 for Nauvoo, IL to serve an 18 month mission. Duane Woodmansee agreed to take over Ralph and Linda’s duties with the Double R Squares and the Sunshine Dancers. When Ralph and Linda returned it was determined that Duane and the Rawlinson’s would continue to share calling responsibilities with the Double R Squares.
The Double R Squares is an all plus club and dances 2 to 3 squares depending on the time of year. For 30-45 min. after the club dance ends, the callers do a little Advanced calling.
We dance at King’s Row RV park in Washington, Utah every Tuesday night from 7 to 8:30 P.M. and we have a lot of fun. Just in this last year, we have added pre rounds to our program with our wonderful cuer Mary Townsend Manning. The Double R Squares dance once a month in June, July, and Aug.
